Bibb City Elementary School was founded in 1915 by the Bibb Manufacturing Company to serve the children of mill workers living in the Bibb City mill village in Columbus, Georgia. The school quickly became the center of community life, providing education, social events, and stability for families whose lives revolved around the textile mill.
For decades, Bibb City Elementary was known for its close-knit environment. Teachers often lived together in a residence called “The Teacherage,” and principals such as Eva Gardner (late 1920s–1955) and Ethel Bentley were remembered for their strong leadership and discipline. Scrapbooks from 1927 to 1955 document school activities, plays, chorus programs, and daily life, reflecting the deep connection between the school and the mill village.
As the textile industry declined and Bibb City changed, the school eventually became part of the Columbus–Muscogee County public school system. Bibb City Elementary closed in 2001. Since then, the building has fallen into severe disrepair, with roof collapse and structural deterioration. Because of its cultural significance, it was listed as a “Place in Peril” by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation in 2018. Preservation advocates continue to hope for restoration or adaptive reuse to honor the history of the mill community.

2018 – The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation lists Bibb City Elementary as a “Place in Peril,” highlighting its cultural importance and the need for preservation.
Present – Preservation advocates continue pushing for restoration or adaptive reuse to honor the history of the Bibb City mill community.
